Fabric Wall Hangings

We have been creating wall hangings on the theme of Eric Carle's illustrations. We could choose an animal, then we designed our work before stitching and sewing to create our works of art!

Stella and Madeleine are busy working side by side creating their sea animals!

Inspiring Art Trip

Rooms 4-7 recently went to see Esther at the library for an art lesson based on Eric Carle's illustrations. He paints onto tissue paper and then uses this paper to create his illustrations of animals. First we painted 3 different designs on tissue paper, then we drew the outline of an animal and used the tissue paper to fill it in. It was quite tricky but we had lots of fun.

Slide Tahuna Slide

Our latest inquiry involves making a mat that Tahuna the Tuatara can use to either go slow or fast down the slide. On his own with no mat he  usually takes 2.19 seconds to get to the bottom of the little adventure slide and 1.72 seconds to get to the bottom of the big adventure slide. Today we worked in groups with a feely bag to describe the texture of different materials and then categorise them by texture. Next we will need to decide which texture will be best for our mats!

Gas Bag!

Add some vinegar and baking soda and you'll always get a reaction! It is a chemical change caused by the reaction of the base and the acid, but also an endothermic reaction as the temperature of the new mixture gets cold!

ANZAC

Today Mrs Beyer-Reiger visited our class to show us her army gear. Maggie got all dressed up including holding the teddy bear (that Mrs Beyer-Reiger said actually belonged to Mr Beyer-Reiger!) Maggie said the uniform was really hot and she didn't know how they could wear it all day. Then Pad-Thai got to wear the gas mask. She said it felt really tight around her face.
Mrs Beyer-Reiger explained that the army today is busy peace keeping and helping in other places like Vanuatu after the cyclone. She also showed us how they slept in trenches and cooked their food. It was really interesting to learn all about it from someone who served in the army!
